Poult Owners Vow To Do Better After Pet Store Kicks Puppy
A pet store in the Midwest is under fire this week after a video of an employee kicking a puppy surfaced. The store has since apologized, but the damage may have been done.
Public outrage has led to boycotts of the business and vows from poult owners around the country to do better by their pets.
"I'm just disgusted by what I saw," said one woman, who said she would never shop at the store again. "It's not right to treat any living thing that way."
Others expressed similar sentiments on social media, with some vowing never to set foot in the store again and others calling for a boycott.
The pet store issued an apology through its Facebook page, saying it was "devastated" by what had happened.
"We are appalled by this incident and are taking swift action," the statement read. "We have terminated the employee involved and are working with authorities to bring justice to the puppy."
The store also said it was committed to doing better in the future and would be setting up new policies and training procedures to ensure something like this never happens again.
Activists Call For Boycott Of Poult After Animal Abuse Videos Surface
On social media, videos of animal abuse at Poult, a major poultry producer, have sparked calls for a boycott. The company has issued a statement denying the allegations and claiming that the video was doctored.
The Animal Legal Defense Fund has filed a lawsuit against Poult, alleging that the company "has consistently failed to provide basic humane sheltering for its animals." In addition to the abuse caught on camera, the ALDF claims that chickens at Poult are "locked in battery cages so small the birds can't even spread their wings," and are "subjected to brutally violent mutilations without painkillers."
The boycott has already gained traction online, with #BoycottPoult trending on Twitter. One user wrote, "I won't be contributing to the torture of animals by buying their products. RT if you agree!"
In a statement released to the press, Poult denied all wrongdoing and claimed that the footage was "falsely edited to create misleading impressions." The company said it is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for its animals and accused the ALDF of spreading misinformation.
So far, Poult has not released any additional information to back up its claim that the footage was doctored. The ALDF is calling for an independent investigation into the allegations of animal abuse at Poult's facilities.
Horrible Conditions Found at Poult Store; Mayor Promises Investigation
Mayor Barrett has promised a full investigation into the conditions at the Poult store in the wake of an undercover expose by reporters from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The journalists found appalling conditions at the store, including live animals crammed into small cages, feces and blood dripping from racks of poultry, and employees handling food with their bare hands.
"The health and safety of our residents is paramount," said Barrett in a statement. "I am disgusted by what I see in these videos, and we will get to the bottom of it."
Barrett also noted that he had been in contact with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection about the situation.
According to the Journal Sentinel report, a whistleblower tipped off reporters about the conditions at Poult after becoming concerned about the health implications for customers.
The video footage shot by the reporters shows chickens covered in their own feces, mice running free among the birds, and employees not wearing gloves as they handled raw meat.
In one scene, an employee is seen scooping piling raw chicken guts onto his bare hands before reaching for a cigarette.
"It made me physically sick to my stomach," said one of the reporters who went undercover at Poult. "I can't believe that this is allowed to go on in our city – and right under our noses."
Poult owner Mohammad Choudry denied any wrongdoing, telling WISN 12 News that his employees always wear gloves and that he takes food safety seriously. He added that he has been in business for 27 years without any complaints.
